Character Information: Nanami Lucia
Profile & Name
Name notes: This character's given name is written as "Lucia" on several items of official merchandise, as well as in the back of volume 05 of the manga. "Lucia" is an Italian/Spanish/Latin name that means "light." Santa Lucia (Saint Lucy), the patron saint of light, is often artistically depicted as a mermaid. We can assume that the Italian name is the one indicated here, since it should be pronounced as "Lu-Chi-A," which is the same way that Japanese speakers would read the letters in her name ("Ru-Chi-A"). In Spanish, it would have a softer pronunciation, like "Lu-Shee-A" or "Lu-Sha." In Latin, it would be pronounced as "Loo-KI-ah" (thank you, Anneka!).
Lucia's assumed family name, Nanami, is written with the kanji characters for "seven" and "oceans."
Nanami Lucia
Lucia is junior high school student who is both blessed, and cursed, with the same personality characteristics that befall almost every shoujo heroine: a simple heart, and a simple mind. Fortunately, Lucia also has courage and determination in abundance. She lives and works in the public baths, Pearl Waters, along with her "older sister" Nikora, and her guardian penguin, Hippo.
Lucia is actually a mermaid, or more specifically, the Princess of the North Pacific Ocean. When she was six years old, Lucia gave her pearl to a boy that she saved from drowning. (Or so she thought... This story is retconned in chapter 32.) When she turned thirteen, however, she was forced to assume a human form, show up on dry land, and search for her pearl. Nikora explained that Lucia needed her pearl in order to become an adult; and in the mermaid world, thirteen is considered the age of adulthood (as was explained in chapter 06, and later again in chapter 32).
But Lucia is more than just a mermaid princess. Using her Pink Pearl, Lucia can transform into Pink Pearl Voice, and use the power of her singing voice as an offensive attack against the evil creatures of the sea.
At the beginning of the manga, Lucia did not know that she was a princess, and Nikora did not explain to her the real reason that she needed her pearl (which would be to summon Aqua Regina). The reason for Lucia being raised not knowing that she was a princess is rather complicated. When Lucia was born, Madame Taki, her kingdom's resident fortune-teller, oversaw the baby princess's birth, as she had so many before. But Lucia's pearl shone with a light brighter than any Taki had seen before, and in that moment, Taki saw Lucia's future, and saw that Lucia was burdened with a "dark and deep hardship." Unsure of what to do, Taki decided to raise the baby Lucia not as a princess, but as a normal mermaid, until the day came when she would be old enough to be told her destiny.
AGE NOTES: Chapter 32 confirms that Lucia is six years old when she gives her pearl to Kaito. Lucia is thirteen years old in chapter 01 of the manga. In chapter 11, she observes her fourteenth birthday.

Magical Items
Pink Pearl
The Pink Pearl is the source of Lucia's power; she needs it to transform into Pink Pearl Voice. It is also the source of her life energy. In chapter 32 of the manga, it is revealed that during the years that Kaito had Lucia's pearl, it was energy from Aqua Regina that kept Lucia alive.seashell locket
Like the other mermaids, Lucia keeps her pearl in a seashell locket that she wears around her neck. Her locket is pink in color.Orange Pearl
During the second story arc of the manga, Lucia also carries the Orange Pearl, in which she collects the fragments of Seira's heart. She keeps the Orange Pearl inside of her seashell locket, beside her own Pink Pearl.microphone
When she transforms into Pink Pearl Voice, Lucia uses her microphone to project her singing voice. Without her microphone, she appears to be rather powerless.harp
In chapter 13, Aqua Regina transforms Caren's Purple Pearl into a magical harp. Lucia, Hanon, and Rina use the sound of the harp to track down Gakuto's castle beneath the sea. Inside Gakuto's castle, however, the strings of the harp vanish. When Lucia finds the courage to believe in Aqua Regina, the strings re-appear. Lucia plays the harp, and it dissolves into the spirit of Aqua Regina herself.
