Character Information:
2nd Arc Villains
Michel | ![]()
Michel is a mysterious angelic being with four wings. (He grows another pair of wings, making six total, at a later point in the manga.) Michel considers himself to be an angel; he claims that his words are the word of God. He hates humans, considering them unclean and defiled. However, he considers mermaids to be a superior race, much like his own. Michel's goal, in the beginning of the second story arc, seems to be the destruction of the human world; he does not understand why the mermaid world is siding with the humans, instead of helping him and his minions. By chapter 25 of the manga, however, Michel has grown tired of the mermaid princesses' refusals to join him, and declares them all his "enemies" who "have become corrupt and abandoned God."
Michel has a number of magical items at his disposal, the most important being his flute, the sound of which can enchant the victims that he needs to feed off of. Because of his weak body, Michel seeks to feed off the energy of other powerful beings. He first victim is Kaito, who loses his memories as a result of Michel's attack. His second victim is Seira, who is left devastated and barely "alive" after Michel steals the fragments of her heart. In addition, Michel seems to depend on medicine created by "that one" (see below) to survive, although taking said medicine only seems to make him suffer more. By the way, Michel can also transform his flute into a whip (his favored weapon) and a bow and arrow.
Michel's ultimate mission is to revive his kingdom, which basically means destroying the human world and replacing it with his own. However, even as he struggles to complete his dream, he suffers - from physical pain, from loneliness, from a sense that he is incomplete. After he finally succeeds in bringing his kingdom back to life, he gazes out upon the strange world that he has created, and thinks to himself, Is this what I wanted? It looks like a wasteland... Michel is haunted by the fact that he is not quite sure what exactly he is. At one point in the manga, Michel's hunger drives him to bloodily devour two of the servants that he created. The scene ends with Michel's anguished scream, "Just what the hell AM I?!"
So, what is Michel? You can read the ultimate spoilers about Michel's identity, and about the end of the manga, here. Big, big spoilers though - consider yourselves warned!
Michel's Name Notes: This is rather complicated, so I moved it to a separate page. Click here.
Fuku-chan | ![]()
Fuku-chan is a creepy little creature that NORMALLY appears to be Michal's pet bird. However, when Fuku-chan reveals his true form, he has a human-like head, giant bug-eyes, and a halo.
Fuku-chan is Michel's right-hand bird. Fuku-chan has the authority to scold Lady Bat, Lanhua, and the Black Beauty Sisters. "My words are Michel-sama's words, and Michel-sama's words are *that one's* words," Fuku-chan tells the disgruntled ranks. "That one," of course, refers to the mysterious head villain who ranks above even Michel. Fuku-chan appears to be the nastiest, meanest, most manipulative of the villains - at first. Yet even he has his saving point. Fuku-chan is utterly and completely devoted to his true master, Michel. However, in order to achieve the goal of Michel's revival, Fuku-chan will use any and all means necessary - including lying, cheating, deception, and casual experiments with human lives. Fuku even uses the "fake" Michel as nothing more than a tool to help him awaken the "real" Michel (er, if you're lost with that sentence, read the spoilers linked above). Yet even Fuku, as evil as he may be, ultimately finds his moment of redemption in the end.
That One / H I M | ![]()
"That one," the mysterious head villain that even Michel is subordinate to, appears to be nothing more than a pillar of flame atop Michel's castle. However, "That one" has substantial powers - he is the one who creates Alala out of thin air, and may have been responsible for the creation of Lady Bat and Lanhua as well. Also in some dialogue later in the manga, Michel says that he was the one who created his three servants (even Alala?), so I don't know.
"That one" is the one who drives Michel to "complete" himself by absorbing others. He also provides the medicine that Michel apparently needs to survive, although taking the medicine only makes Michel suffer more. "That one" can also apparently manifest himself in front of certain people on Earth, although only as an illusion.
Ultimately, however, the identity of "That one" is revealed to be none other than the warped remains of Amagi Rihito and Amagi Michal's father. And he isn't as in charge as he appears to be - he was actually being manipulated by Fuku-chan all along. For more about Rihito's father and how/why he ended up as a pillar of fire, click here.
Black Beauty Sisters | ![]()
The Black Beauty Sisters are resurrected by Michel, in order to become his servants. You can read more about them here.
Lady Bat | ![]()
Lady Bat is the first of Michel's servants to appear in the manga. She introduces herself as "the wings that rule love and pleasure." Her power is that she can sing a song that sends its listeners into a trance. She claims that her "kiss" (read: bite) can make the mermaids forget all about humans. If Lady Bat is a vampire, then what she drains from her victims is memories, not blood. Of course, her ultimate goal is to get the mermaid princesses to join with Michel in his crusade against the human world. However, like any evil minion, Lady Bat finds that the mermaid princesses can spoil even her best-laid plans. But Lady Bat isn't deterred. She power-ups a couple times during the course of the manga, and at one point, her song becomes powerful enough to cause the mermaid princesses to de-transform, from their idol forms back into their mermaid forms.
Note: Lady Bat is actually a guy. But since she dresses as a woman and identifies herself as a woman, I will continue to refer to her as a "she."
Lanhua | ![]()
Lanhua is the second of Michel's servants to appear in the manga. She appears to be some sort of Chinese butterfly. She introduces herself as "the wings that rule desire and pleasure." She tells Lucia not to worry: "Because I am the wings of desire and pleasure, I can defeat you without causing you to suffer." Lanhua's power is that she can divide herself into endless numbers of chibi versions of herself. In chapter 23 of the manga, the chibi-Lanhua glomp all over Lucia, preventing her from transforming into Pink Pearl Voice. Unfortunately, Lanhua was defeated before she could demonstrate any other actually useful powers.
Name Notes: Lanhua's name is Chinese, not Japanese. As such, when romanized according to the Pinyin system, it should be written as "Lanhua." In Chinese,
means "orchid."
Alala | ![]()
Alala is the third of Michel's servants to appear in the manga. She introduces herself as "the wings of dreams and decadence." Alala is super-cute, super-perky, and super-pretty. She is constantly surrounded by sparkling stars in a way that should be downright disgusting. Alala's power is that when she sings, stars shoot out of her microphone. Should one of those stars hit a person (like, say, a mermaid princess), then the victim will descend into a dream from which he or she will never want to awaken. And I'm not sure what sort of winged creature Alala is supposed to emulate, but to me, she looks particularly insectile.
Name Notes: Alala's name could be romanized as either "Arara" or "Alala." In the anime, however, her name is written out as "Alala."
